The Rohit Sharma Conundrum
Rohit Sharma’s form has dipped significantly over the last couple of years, especially since he took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli. While he has scored a ton in the first test on Caribbean soil, it’s important to note that West Indies are no longer considered elite opposition in 2023. But a couple of convincing ODI knocks can do wonders for his confidence and help prolong his international career.
LCI Recommendation: Sharma usually delivers against inferior opponents and this makes him a leading candidate for top-scoring honors.
Yuzi Chahal is Back
Many experts were wondering whether Chahal would make his way back into the ODI squad. But the spinner will be back after delivering the goods again in the recently concluded IPL season – 21 dismissals in just 14 matches. Rohit Sharma is expected to use him (along with all-rounder Axar Patel) to demolish the West Indian middle order, which simply isn’t performing well in recent months.
LCI Recommendation: Just like Ashwin dominated the bowling in the test series, Chahal can finish the ODI series as India’s top wicket-taker.
KL Rahul Won’t Be Available
There was talk about KL Rahul joining the squad after the test series, but this is not the case. The batting ace will continue his rehab in India and fully recover from the injury he suffered in the latter stages of the IPL season. Sanju Samson is expected to be the opening wicket keeper in his absence, with Isahn Kishan possibly playing a part in the third ODI if the first two games go India’s way.
LCI Recommendation: Kl was India’s most reliable scorer during the pandemic, but has become very injury-prone of late. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Suryakumar “Sky” Yadav
Simply put, Suryakumar Yadav is India’s most dynamic and flamboyant batsman in limited overs cricket. That said, he’s more of a T20 specialist and still needs to provide a couple of knocks in this series to cement his place in the ODI lineup. Expect more fireworks from the Mumbai Indians dynamo as he loves to use the pace of the seamers to send the ball into the parking lot and beyond.
LCI Recommendation: Sky won’t be opening the innings, with Sharma, Gill and Kohli playing before him. He probably won’t finish as the top scorer.
Beware of the Third ODI
India vs west indies 2023, team India simply has too much firepower for the West Indies side this time around. Besides the quality batting and bowling, this team now boasts no less than three dominant all-rounders – Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. A quick 2-0 lead can lead to a big anti-climax, with the Indian coaches possibly opting to rest the star players and give the substitutes some burn.
LCI Recommendation: If Team India wins the first two games, we highly recommend steering clear of the third ODI.
Team India Squad for the ODI Series Against the West Indies: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain), Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Umran Malik, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar.
