EPL 2023 Betting Guide – Team by Team
Manchester City
Last Season: 1st | Prediction: 2nd
Pep Guardiola has the fattest chequebook in the league and he is putting it to good use. Despite the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez leaving the club, new signings like Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic should help keep the momentum going. That said, City did play deep into last season, opposing teams will be better prepared for Erling Haaland, and Kevin De Bruyne is 32 years old.
Recommendation: Pep’s team is looking at a congested schedule this season, including the World Club Cup. They’ll win a lot but will run out of steam in April.
Arsenal
Last Season: 2nd | Prediction: 1st
Michel Arteta suffered another heartbreaking finale last season as he saw Man City overtake his team in the last month. This time around, the Gunners have a deeper squad that should make the difference. Declan Rice is ready to rumble, Kai Havertz is looking for redemption, and Dutch starlet Jurrien Timber looks ready for his breakthrough season.
Recommendation: Arsenal will be a tough team to beat this season, especially at home. We predict a historic championship after a long drought.
Man United
Last Season: 3rd | Prediction: 5th
The ugly Cristiano Ronaldo divorce didn’t go down well with the Man Utd fans, but it has probably led to a massive club ownership change. Erik ten Hag has introduced strict training and gameday rules to try and return this club to its glory days. This squad will be looking to build on the chemistry it managed to create last season, with Mason Mount being the only big-name addition.
Recommendation: Man United won’t lose too many games this season, but can Hojlund make good on his potential? We don’t think so.
Newcastle
Last Season: 4th | Prediction: 7th
Newcastle made a lot of noise in the second half of last season after being acquired by Saudi owners. But it also benefited from the fact that Chelsea and Tottenham had subpar seasons. We do think the team will finish in the top third of the table, but there haven’t been enough signings to make the next step. Youngsters Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley will be given a chance to showcase their abilities.
Recommendation: Playing in the Champions League will take a toll on the Magpies and will deny them a chance of recreating results like last season.
Liverpool
Last Season: 5th | Prediction: 4th
Jurgen Klopp had a lot of problems last season, with Mo Salah losing his spark and Sadio Mane’s absence being felt in the big games. Darwin Nunez hasn’t really impressed anyone so far and will need to be more consistent going ahead. Can a healthy Luis Diaz make a difference? Henderson, Milner, and Firmino have departed, but newcomers Alexis Mac Allister and Hungarian winger Dominik Szoboszlai will be given the chance to shine.
Recommendation: Liverpool’s squad hasn’t really improved, but no Champions League games mean that this team can focus on getting back into the EPL top-4.
Brighton
Last Season: 6th | Prediction: 9th
With Tottenham and Chelsea faltering towards the end of last season, the Seagulls took full advantage and recorded a top-6 finish. Even the most optimistic Brighton fan will admit that this scenario is highly likely to repeat itself, especially with no real big signings being made during the offseason. Brazilian forward João Pedro has joined the club, but Alexis Mac Allister and Robert Sanchez are gone.
Recommendation: Brighton will play in the Europa League this season, something that will put more stress on an already thin squad. We predict a mid-table finish.
Aston Villa
Last Season: 7th | Prediction: 8th
Unai Emery has done an impressive job so far, bringing Villa into the UEFA Europa Conference League. The added revenue has allowed him to onboard big names like Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby. But the congested schedule and midweek fixtures will take on this promising team’s squad, which simply lacks the depth required to duplicate last season’s successes.
Recommendation: Aston Villa probably will have an average season, but can get a good result against any team on its day. Looking for surprise draws? Pick this team.
Tottenham
Last Season: 8th | Prediction: 3rd
The Conte experiment was a colossal failure, leading the Spurs into a nasty freefall. This talented team won’t be competing in Europe this season, but surprisingly has only gotten better with the additions of Jamie Maddison, Manor Solomon, and Pedro Porro. What’s even more shocking (positively) is that Kane, Son and Richarison are still going to spearhead the Spurs’ attack.
Recommendation: Assuming Daniel Levi doesn’t sell off Kane and Son, this Europe-free Spurs squad should be able to finish in the top-4.
Brentford
Last Season: 9th | Prediction: 11th
Brentford has impressed football pundits all over the world with its data-driven approach and non-nonsense philosophy. This trend isn’t likely to change this season. Manager Thomas Frank is a great tactician and his team salvaged no less than 14 draws last season. Do note that Ivan Toney has been banned until January, something that should put a dent in his plans.
Recommendation: The lack of star signings and Toney’s suspension means that we can expect more of the same from this team – lots of draws with tight wins and losses.
Fulham
Last Season: 10th | Prediction: 13th
Things are not looking good for this London team. Star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is not happy with the direction of the club and star signing João Palhinha is struggling to regain his fitness. It’s also highly doubtful that young star Jay Stansfield will be able to fill in for the former if his wish is granted. Raul Jimenez is worth a dozen of points just by himself and that should be enough to keep the team afloat.
Recommendation: This is going to be a rough season for the Fulham loyal, with Mitrovic being the only difference-maker as long as he’s with the team.
Crystal Palace
Last Season: 11th | Prediction: Last-5 / Relegation Battle
With veteran coach Roy Hodgson on the touchlines from the get-go unlike last season, Crystal Palace will be hoping for a strong start to the season and a quiet winter. Stay winger Wilfried Zaha has been sold to Turkish champions Galatasaray, with no proper replacement in place so far. All eyes will be on Eberechi Eze and Cheick Doucouré, who will be expected to produce the goods.
Recommendation: While Hodgeson’s experience should get them some vital draws, it’s looking like this team will not be able to survive in the top flight.
Chelsea
Last Season: 12th | Prediction: 6th
Chelsea has become the laughingstock of the Premier League in the last couple of years. Mauricio Pochettino has been brought in by the brass to try and instil some kind of methodology into the proceedings. With Mason Mount and Kai Havertz gone, all eyes will be on Enzo Fernández. Pochettino is going to give his fellow Argentine the keys and give his youngsters (Lewis Hall, Ian Maatsen) more chances.
Recommendation: We expect Chelsea to build a solid foundation season and dominate the inferior competition. But don’t expect any miracles against the big teams.
Wolves
Last Season: 13th | Prediction: Last-5 / Relegation Battle
Raul Jimenez is gone. So are Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho. This Wolves team simply doesn’t have the finances to field a respectable 11 anymore. With all due respect to Julen Lopetegui, even his coaching skills won’t be able to avoid landfalls and avalanches against the big teams this season. Petro Neto is a solid winger, but he’s also injury-prone and has no real partner upfront.
Recommendation: The Wolves were once a solid mid-table team that could shock the best of teams, but this is going to be a disastrous season for them.
West Ham
Last Season: 14th | Prediction: 10th
West Ham United is a good team. Despite seriously underperforming in the EPL, David Moyes’s lads won the Europa Conference League last season. The bad news is that Declan Rice is gone. Making matters worse, no potential replacement has been signed. Jarrod Bowen and Danny Ings will be expected to perform in attack, with the ageing rearguard expected to lock down the lowly teams.
Recommendation: West Ham United should do slightly better than last season, but the loss of Rice means that it won’t be able to break into the top half.
Bournemouth
Last Season: 15th | Prediction: 12th
Bournemouth means business. The team has a new international coach (a first), Andoni Iraola. Two impressive signings have been made in the form of Milos Kerkez and Justin Kluivert. All things point to a solid mid-table finish for this bubbling and positive football team. Ukrainian starlet Illya Zabarnyi is also turning heads in training with his solid defence. Expect a breakthrough season from him.
Recommendation: Iraola believes in attacking football and this team will be scoring (and conceding) a lot of goals. One of the better “Over” bets out there today.
Nottingham Forest
Last Season: 16th | Prediction: Last-5 / Relegation Battle
After a pretty unimpressive and lacklustre season, the team’s executives have been investing in some interesting signings. Morgan Gibbs-White is coming off a stellar U-21 championship and should help Steve Cooper in the attacking department, but what about the defence? When 17-year-old Zach Abbott is the only defender you can boast about, your team is in trouble. We’ll leave it at that.
Recommendation: Unfortunately, Nottingham Forest has nothing to offer against the majority of EPL teams. It’s safe to say relegation is on the cards.
Everton
Last Season: 17th | Prediction: 15th
Gone are the days when Everton was a legitimate top-8 team in the English Premier League. The funding and belief simply aren’t there anymore. This is clearly evident by looking at the team’s off-season activity. Ashley Young has been signed on a free transfer, but the team will still be relying on veterans like Jordan Pickford and Séamus Coleman to pull off miracles. Goodison Park has had better days.
Recommendation: Everton should be able to get going against a handful of teams, but the quality simply isn’t there anymore. But there’s just enough to be safe.
Burnley
Last Season: — | Prediction: 14th
Burnley boss Vincent Company will lead his team in an opener against his former club Man City. We don’t expect any miracles from him in this game, but Burnley is a pretty decent team that can make some noise this season. Zeki Amdouni, James Trafford, Jordan Beyer, Dara O’Shea, Michael Obafemi, Luca Koleosho, Nathan Redmond, and Sander Berge should form a decent foundation for years to come.
Recommendation: Burnley are not newcomers. They have been in and out of the Premier League in the last 2 decades. So, once again they will be in the relegation battle, come end of the season.
Luton Town
Last Season: — | Prediction: Last-5 / Relegation Battle
What a great story. Luton Town is back in the top flight after no less than 3 decades. But what can this team offer to its fans with local names like Joe Payne, Gordon Turner, Mick Harford, Brian Stein, and Carlton Morris? The answer is obvious. This team is going to try and grab as many draws as possible to survive in the top flight? Will the team succeed in its mission? We doubt it.
Recommendation: As much as we would like this to be wrong, Luton Town doesn’t have much to offer in the top flight and should be relegated pretty early in the season.
Sheffield United
Last Season: — | Prediction: Prediction: Last-5 / Relegation Battle
Iliman Ndiaye had an amazing season in the Championship and almost single-handedly led Sheffield United to the Premier League. The bad news is that he has been sold to Marseille. What does the team have to offer besides grit and stubbornness? Anis Slimane and Bénie Traoré are the only significant names on offer. This season is going to be a tough one for Sheffield United.
Recommendation: Sheffield United’s team has changed a lot since they were relegated not long ago. If they can get some good results against the bottom half of the table, then they could guarantee their place in the Premier League next season.
